Pivot 一词源自法语 pivot （枢纽、支轴；支承、轴头、轴颈；销），其基本含义为“枢轴、轴销、支点、中心点”。枢轴、支点等都是比较关键核心的部件或位置，因此 pivot 后来就被用来引申指“关键人物、中心人物”或事物的“中心、核心、重点”，比如：

西非是可可豆贸易的中心。

West Africa was the pivot of the cocoa trade.

前游击队领导人成了决定该穷困国家政治稳定与否的关键人物。

The former guerrilla leader has become the pivot on which the destitute country's emerging political stability turns.

当 pivot 用作动词时，自然表示“在枢轴上旋转、转动”或者说“围绕着某个中心点旋转、转动”，既可以用 pivot sth 表示转动某物，也可以用 pivot on/around sth 表示围绕某物转动，比如：

她扭了左脚，就摊手摊脚地躺在床上。

She pivoted her left foot and then sprawled on the bed.

他脚跟一转，向外走去，毫不犹豫。

He pivoted on his heels and headed out without demur.

另外，当围绕着某物转动时，往往也就意味着事情行不行得通完全取决于该物，所以 pivot on/around sth 还可以引申表示“完全依赖于或取决于某物”，比如：
